The shawl collar jacket has its roots in early 20th-century US Navy workwear. Its distinctive, rounded collar and straightforward construction were designed around the practical demands of working at sea.

The original denim workwear jacket evolved from an earlier pullover style into a full button-front jacket, with the five-button version introduced in 1918. The shawl collar became one of the defining features of the garment, providing protection around the neck while retaining the simplicity and freedom of movement required for working on deck.

For this version, we have taken that naval workwear archetype and reworked it in a different material and construction.

Made in Italy from 14oz Melton wool commissioned and sourced from Santa Lucia Textile, the cloth is an 80% wool / 20% nylon blend. The composition draws on the wool and nylon cloth used in U.S. military garments such as the OG-108 cold-weather field shirt, where the combination provided a durable and insulating fabric for service use.

The dense Melton gives the jacket a substantial weight and clean structure, while the nylon content adds durability. The entire outer construction, including the distinctive shawl collar, is made from the same cloth.

Inside, the jacket is fully lined in 10oz Herringbone Twill cotton, adding structure and durability while providing a considered finish throughout.

We've replaced the original workwear patch pockets with classic diagonal-entry handwarmer pockets, integrated cleanly into the front of the jacket. A single internal pocket provides additional storage.

The cuffs are buttoned and finished with subtle stitch detailing, with twin-needle construction used in areas of greater strain. Tonal stitching keeps the detailing understated.

Finished with five corozo nut buttons and a plain back, the jacket retains the character of its naval origins while taking the silhouette somewhere more understated and refined.
